SILVER HEART - Setting: Whistler

Whistler is one of my favorite winter getaways, so it’s no surprise that it served as a perfect setting for a love story featuring one hot snowboarder!

Though most aspects of my novel’s setting are purely fictional, many locations featured in Silver Heart were inspired by this winter wonderland town and its many unique activities.

Whistler Village

Whistler has always been a hotspot for winter getaways, and it made its mark on the world of sport during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Shopping, bars, restaurants, clubs—Whistler has it all. Although Silver Heart’s characters stay at a fictional resort and visit fictional bars and clubs, many of those places are modeled after various types of accommodation and entertainment venues found within the Whistler Village.

Thanks to Dylan’s best friend’s wealthy client, the girls have a lavish chalet all to themselves for an entire week!

“The third floor window has a great view of the ski hills. In turn, we have the perfect view of a group of sexy snowboarders tearing up the night runs.” – Maddie Evans.

“I didn’t know this would be such a party place,” Maddie said as we pulled into the driveway. “Since we’re not staying in the main village I thought we’d have to trek for miles to get to all the fun stuff, but it looks like our entertainment is covered for the entire week.”

Skiing and Snowboarding

Whistler-Blackcomb is a hotspot for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and levels. There are so many different runs to explore and conquer. The resort also boasts three glaciers (yikes!), terrain parks and half pipes, heli-skiing, and so much more!

Uhh…I swear I’m not trying to sell you a timeshare to this place!

Dylan tries her best to learn to snowboard, with some very “interesting” results. But I’ll let you read about those adventures for yourself. For now, here are some teasers.

For me, snowboarding and failure went hand in hand. I’d tried to conquer my fear of it numerous times before, and the only thing I’d succeeded in was getting various bruises on my knees, butt, and the heels of my hands. – Dylan Silver

“One more run, Silver,” Sawyer said, placing his hand over mine. “I promise to deliver you back to Maddie in one piece. And maybe even buy you dinner on the way home.”

“You mean breakfast,” I corrected him. “By the time I get down again it’ll be tomorrow morning!”

“If I’m buying you breakfast it’ll be for reasons that have nothing to do with snowboarding,” he whispered in my ear, sending a rush of warmth through me.

Bungee Jumping

You read that correctly! A 53-metre/160-foot drop from a bridge overlooking a river. Summer and winter/day and night jumps. Need I say more?

Would you be brave enough to try this?

Sawyer thinks Dylan is, prompting some moments.

Not to mention fun quotes:

Bungee Jumping?! Are you freaking insane?”
Sawyer grinned. “Total loss of control,” he said huskily.
“More like total loss of mind,” I shot back.

“Let’s go, Silver. Time to live a little.”
“Or die a lot.”

“Panda up, baby,” he whispered in my ear. “And don’t let go.”

Ziplining

I forced my eyes to stay open as my feet left the platform, indulging every one of my senses in the thrill of the ride. A blur of green, brown, and white spilled out below me; streams of blue and white flowed above me.

The air was sharper and fresher at such a high altitude. The smell of pine needles and ice reminded me of Sawyer. As always, it both warmed my insides and filled me with pleasurable shivers. Inhaling deeply, I let the scent wash over my skin, filling my lungs with the crispness of the nature around us.

Peak to Peak Gondola

I believe that this is a fairly new attraction: a gondola ride between the Whistler and Blackcomb peaks. It travels around 3 miles in 10 minutes, offering beautiful views of the mountain vista. This particular location does play a brief, but important role in Silver Heart.

“This ride is three miles long. That means that you’re all mine for the next ten minutes. In that amount of time, I’m going to make you realize that you should be mine even after that.” – Sawyer Carter

Let’s just say…what happens in the gondola, stays in the gondola. ;)

Hope you enjoyed learning about the inspiration behind Silver Heart’s setting! Please note that I am in no way affiliated with Whistler (I know, I know—I paint such a pretty picture of the resort that you want to go right now and find your very own Sawyer!) All of the places mentioned in the book are used for purely fictional purposes.

CHAT - *Getting It*

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I love writing and would continue writing for the rest of my life even if no one ever read a single word. However, sharing the worlds and characters I love so dearly with others is such a special, intimate privilege, and I’m grateful to be able to do this with you!

One of the most exhilarating, touching, and humbling things for an author is when a reader just *gets* their book. The feelings go hand-in-hand with the overall process of crafting the story very closely. I feel extremely honored when readers get exactly what I was trying to portray or how I meant a certain character/scene to come off.

At the same time, I’m a big believer of Edmund Wilson’s quote: "No two persons ever read the same book." I understand that not everyone will always *get it* or read my words in the particular way I intended. And that’s okay. That’s what makes the act of creating so beautiful! And sometimes scary.

Last night, I received such an amazing review of Silver Heart that I felt like I needed to say a public thank you to this particular reader (and all of the other readers who take the time to read my work – even the ones who may not always *get it*.)

So thank you, thank you, thank you! You rock my socks. And shoes. And…pants? (Too far? Yeah…)

On a side note, I should probably say that I don’t spend time searching for reviews that aren’t directly linked to me (through email, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) as I’m a big believer that authors shouldn’t hover over their readers unless they’re invited to join the party! In part because I’m not always going to like what everyone has to say (and sometimes negative reviews can hinder future creative process), but mostly because readers and bloggers have the right to interpret my books in any way they wish and should be at liberty to write reviews without worrying that I’m going to stalk them. (Don’t worry, I’m too busy stalking imaginary book boys and my favorite TV show characters—hello, Dean and Jax—to have time for anything else.) But this review popped up in my feed and had such a great opening I couldn’t not peek. I may have even *squeed* and *eeked* a little. Because they *got it*. Every single little thing.

So what does a reader *getting it* do for me as an author? (Aside from making me insanely happy that I’m forced to blog about it, of course.) It fuels my creative process and sets a fire under my fingers. It makes me write more…faster…better. It encourages me to bring everything I have to the work that I do, even if some of those things may be scary and personal. Because someone out there will *get it*.

I’m currently working on a few projects, one of which is taking longer than I expected and will not be announced for a while. Mostly because there was something missing from the story. I was afraid to push a personal boundary in fear that it may be too personal, too revealing, too scary. But readers like this make me realize that it’s worth to take those risks. So over the next week, I will be reworking that story to include this particular missing piece of the puzzle that will make my character much more real and whole. And it was all inspired by one review for a completely different book on an entirely different topic. Huh! Pretty cool, right?

*Don’t worry, this one incident doesn’t mean that I will be stalking any future reviews. :)

SILVER HEART - Sale, Song, and Giveaway

Since Silver Heart's release, I have been so touched by the outpour of support from readers and bloggers. It makes me absolutely ecstatic to hear that you loved the story and these characters I grew to care about so deeply!

I know that many of you have done various things to help spread the word about Sawyer and Silver (thank you, thank you, thank you!) I also definitely know that we all love bargain books. Therefore, I wanted to keep the Silver Heart $0.99 sale going for as long as possible! You have until August 8th - Midnight EST to purchase the book at the less-than-a-buck discount before it goes up to its regular price. I'm a huge $0.99 book nerd (maybe even an addict), so I hope that you'll join me in embracing the deal and telling others about it. Happy reading!

There's also a $20.00 Amazon/Book Depository gift card giveaway happening right now (courtesy of superhero blogger Evie!) You should definitely run over to her page to thank her and enter right away.

Another piece of fun news: amazing blogger Jessirae included the perfect song for Silver Heart in her review. It just makes me melt! For those of you who've read the book - what do you think? Isn't this Sawyer & Silver?! <3

I'm putting together a reader-inspired Silver Heart playlist, so if you connect certain songs to characters, scenes, or the book itself, let me know (comment, Tweet, email) and I'll make sure to add them in and credit you.

SILVER HEART - Release Day Sale!

Silver Heart is live on Amazon!

You can buy it for your Kindle by clicking on the picture below.

(It will currently only be available as an e-book.)

Silver Heart is a book about overcoming uncertainties and learning from past mistakes. The story is very dear to my heart, and I’m so happy to be able to share it with you.

The things that Dylan has to face—problems with her family, question about her future, fear of surrendering to love—resonate deeply with me.

They’re real issues that so many of us go through. I’m humbled to hear my readers say that some of the subject matter in the story touched them as it pertained to their lives, and that they understood, rooted for, and loved Dylan. Just like most human beings, she’s not perfect. However, due to her upbringing, she has spent most of her life trying to be. This need for perfection is eating away at her happiness, but breaking the habit of always trying to please others (especially one's parents) isn't easy.

Silver Heart and its characters are rooted in realism. Many New Adults and Adults will have to/have had to make realistic, albeit tough decisions regarding their futures, families, and love at one point or another. My goal was to capture an authentic portrayal of that turbulent moment in our lives when we tend to question our life choices and the future.

Of course, I also had to add in some fun times and sexiness. ;)

I'd like to think that Dylan/Silver and Sawyer could actually be real people, existing out there in the world. I truly hope that they'll also manage to claim your hearts (last use of the word heart, I promise!)

From the bottom of my hea—uhh, stomach—I wish to thank you for your support.

Silver Heart will be on a release special for $0.99 until the end of the week!

Please help spread the word! After that, the price goes up to a hundred adorable little puppies.

Here are some things you can’t buy for $0.99:
Snowboarding lessons from a sexy guy
A week-long getaway to Whistler
Cherries and/or Sushi
Pandas (not even the stuffed one!)
A box of lime popsicles

Here are some things you CAN buy for $0.99
Silver Heart
One lime popsicle (Sawyer may have you craving one as you read!)

Please note that this New Adult novel contains some mature subject matter, including strong language and sexual situations that may not be suitable for all readers. Reader/buyer discretion is advised.

SILVER HEART - Bonus Scene Teaser & News

I'm nervously awaiting the release of Silver Heart so that I can share the love with you guys!

And, if my email messages are any indication, so are you!

Which makes me very excited.

And extremely nervous.

But mostly excited.

I've been receiving some wonderful feedback from bloggers who had signed up for Beta reads and ARCs, which makes me—you guessed it—even more excited! I'm basically a ball of quivering nerves.

And unlike Dylan (that lucky girl!), my excitement has nothing to do with Sawyer. Don't worry, you guys do come in a very close second to him. ;)

I've had final word on when you should be able to purchase the book: July 30th, 2013!

Since I made you wait longer than originally planned for the release, instead of sitting around and biting my nails and drinking lots of coffee and eating tons of chocolate, I decided to write in a bonus sexy scene—one that wasn't even in the ARCs! (I did eat tons of chocolate while I did this, though...)

Here is a tiny teaser (if you've read the ARC you'll know where it fits):

“Another skirt,” he murmured, edging his way under the fabric. “I like it. But these stockings gotta go. Unless you want me to rip them off again.”

I kind of did. But I obeyed his request and helped him remove them. Once they were off, I slipped my feet back into my boots and off the cold floor.

Sawyer’s eyes drank in my bare legs as he treated me to a sultry smile. “Much better.” Sinking on the bench behind him, he reached out to grab my waist. “Come here.”

“You’re quite demanding today,” I said, slightly surprised by the intensity in his voice.

Not that I was complaining. Sawyer’s impatient hunger for me was more than a turn-on.

“We have five minutes before you send me packing, Silver,” he warned. “The more time we waste, the less time I’ll have to do this…”

His right hand drifted down my hip to the inside of my thigh. Scaling up my heated skin, he looped one finger through the bottom of my panties and pulled me closer.

The End - Well, for now...;)

Who wants a snowboarding lesson from Sawyer?! Tweet @vg_writes with the hashtag #SexySnowboarderSawyer and tell me why! I'll pick one random Tweet to win an Amazon copy of Silver Heart the moment it's live!

As always, thank you for your patience and support! Make sure to sign up for the release email HERE and you'll get a personal email from me with the buy link the second it's available!

SILVER HEART - Unpublication Party and Giveaway!

I'm here with a great team of friends, celebrating the "not-yet-publication" of Silver Heart.

July 30th, guys. July 30th.

There was an issue with the Amazon file and we're working on fixing and re-uploading now. After all, I want you to get the perfect first impression of Dylan (Silver) and Sawyer.  I'm so, so excited for you to meet them and read the story!

So while I'm torturing you with the wait, I thought I'd make it even more exhilarating by teasing you a little (but also giving you a chance to be one of the first to read the book with a tiny giveaway)!

“It wasn’t your fault. It was that damn tree,” He smiled down at me. “Want me to throw some more things at it?”

I dug my face into his hoodie and groaned. “How many times have we tried this before? I’ll never get down a single hill without falling.”

He tapped my head with his finger. “Because you’re thinking too hard. You’re worrying about being perfect and you’re forgetting to enjoy yourself.”

“And how do you suggest I enjoy myself?” I sat up and dug my hands into the snow, crushing the cold ice shards between my fingers.

Sawyer propped himself up and slid behind me, capturing my hips between his thighs. Placing his arms around my waist, he pulled me flush against his body into an embrace from behind. We stayed in that position for a while, him with his chin resting on my shoulder as I drowned in his familiar scent. I may have been pissed at the snow, but I loved Sawyer’s wintry smell. Closing my eyes, I inhaled it, immediately feeling a warm sense of comfort spread through my body.

“Do you like snowboarding?” he murmured into my ear. His warm breath washed over me, melting my insides.

Leaning deeper into him, I rested the back of my head against his chest and nodded. “I do,” I replied honestly.

He slowly unzipped my jacket and guided it down my shoulders. Sliding my hair to one side, he pressed his mouth to my neck. “What do you like about it?” he asked as his teeth grazed my skin. The shock of the cold air mixing with his heat caused me to shiver.

“It’s…challenging,” I whispered, inhaling sharply as his warm lips sucked on my pulse.

“What else?” With his mouth still firmly on my neck, his fingers slid down to my front, toying with the heavy-duty zipper of my snow pants.

“It’s something I don’t get right away.” My voice was low and hoarse in response to his touch. “I guess that makes me want to conquer it.”

“You’re a warrior, Silver. Always have been.” As his lips claimed the side of my jaw, my hips instinctively pushed forward, nudging his hand on.

His chest shook as he let out a small chuckle. “I need to hear more before I go any further.” Despite his words, his fingers slid under the waistband of my pants in a playful tease, making me ache for his touch.

“I also like the freedom it represents,” I added, pushing my back deeper into him. “And I love…” I reminded myself to breathe. “I love that it’s connected to you, Sawyer. That’s my favorite thing about snowboarding.”

SILVER HEART - Release Info

I'm so excited to be able to share SILVER HEART with you guys!

Since the Amazon link seems to be taking a while to pop up, feel free to sign up for the release email (link to the form is in the sidebar). I will make sure you're notified the moment it's live!

I'll let the bloggers do the cover reveal - and will eventually do a post on all the drama involved in its making - but as we wait for the book to go live on Amazon, I wanted to tell you a little about the story beyond the synopsis that has already been posted.

“Silver Heart” is a sweet, sexy New Adult story about second chances, unspoken words, and figuring out your path in life. It is a tale about love that develops over a span of one week, though its roots have sprouted an entire decade before.

It is a complete, standalone tale (75 000 words, but an extremely fast read). No cliffhanger ending. It is currently only available as an e-book through Amazon.

Just a warning: this is not a wild, dramatic tale. Don’t except soap opera twists or supernatural beings.
It is a simple moment in time between two long-lost friends who have always wanted more. Just a guy, a girl, and some old memories rekindled by new feelings.

These characters don’t have life all figured out.
After all, who does?

This is fiction that borrows from real life experience.
Except not all of us have the courage to voice our unspoken love.

I wanted to change things up a bit, so Sawyer isn’t your typical NA bad boy.
He’s pretty good. In bed. (Okay, that one wrote itself. Sorry!)

There's also lots of sexy snowboarding. And other things in the snow...;)
Because our literary world needs more sexy snowboarders! Am I right?!

Happy reading! I hope that you enjoy it! You can Tweet me @VG_Writes with your thoughts. I have been receiving some hilarious reader reactions over the past week and am planning to do a funny highlight reel blog post soon.

Also, expect a silver heart themed giveaway next week to celebrate the release!

A big hug to every single blogger who has beta read the book, signed up for the cover reveal, and helped spread the word about Silver and Sawyer! <3
